Tullamore Women continue their winning run

The weekend rain and wind steered clear of Spollenstown on Sunday afternoon as Tullamore and Gorey continued their friendly rivalry. The Tullamore girls were eager to show how far they have improved from last year having been beaten by our Model County rivals three times last year.

They set about their task from the first whistle and were rewarded early on with a try from Clare Currams. The foundations for the try were set through consistent phases before expert handling from the inside backs afforded Clare a clear run in. It was case of ‘if it aint broke’ as further recycling and possession afforded Grace Flynn some space down the right hand touchline. She showed her pace and power to beat the covering defenders and touch down in the corner to leave the score at 12-0. Tullamore finished off the half’s scoring with two further tries. Jill Draper dotted down from a 5 metre scrum and Lauren Keenahan added a fourth after some excellent inside interplay between backs and forwards afforded the outside backs the space to convert.

The second half proved a more even affair with Gorey putting together some fluid attacks with strong running of their own. Tullamore added to their tally after an impressive rolling maul was formed from a lineout. Chloe Lowry was the beneficiary at the end of the move. The scoring was rounded off after some strong surges through the middle of the pitch from Róisín Griffin and Chloe Lowry. It was the ever impressive Nichola Fryday that finished off the move. To her credit Jill Draper has worked hard on her place kicking and she was rewarded with 4 out of 6 kicks, with the majority being from the sidelines. Gorey piled on the pressure in the final few minutes but Tullamore defence held firm to leave the final score at 38-0. The Tullamore victory was founded on the combination of strong running from the likes of Ciara Farrell, Pauline Keating and Evelyn Browne and precise handling from Róisín Griffin, Sarah Keating and Sarah Coffey.

It was handshakes all round at the final whistle before the ideal post match recovery nutrition of tea, buns and cakes! Tullamore would like to thank their sponsors Lambe Brothers, The Blackthorn Pub, Aura Leisure Centre Tullamore, PapaJohns, PrintPlus, Laceys Workwear and The Bus Bar for their continued support for the season ahead.
