1sts get good away bonus point against Boyne

Leinster League Div 1A.

BOYNE   16   TULLAMORE  11.

In a high quality game of rugby played a very fast pace Boyne gained revenge for their narrow defeat by Tullamore earlier in the season. A last minute penalty kick by Niall Geraghty gained a deserved losing bonus point. But for some over anxious play and turnovers in the home sides 22 Tullamore could have won.

With Portlaoise and Monkstown relegated on Saturday Tullamore can ensure their place in the top Division with a win over Dundalk next Saturday at home with a 2.00pm K.O.  Two wins could leave them finishing 3rd so tight and competitive is this league.

The first quarter was evenly contested but after twenty one minutes  sustained pressure yielded Boyne six points when Niall Kerby kicked a penalty from the half way line for offside and then seven minutes lateranother from under the posts for not releasing. The decisive try came in the thirty fifth minute when the Boyne winger kicked ahead, gathered, drew his man and fed inside to No 8 Eoin Collins to score and Kerby converted. Tullamore got on the board just before the break with a Niall Geraghty penalty.

An early Boyne penalty stretched the lead to thirteen points but Tullamore kept fighting hard against the best defence in the league. Some vital turnovers and knock ons  prevented possible scores  but eventually Keith Scally somehow squeezed in for a try with ten minutes left. Tullamore got some reward for their efforts when they were awarded a penalty thirty five metres out that Niall Geraghty kicked.

Keith Scally with his third try in successive games brings great pace and flair to the centre where he now belongs. Aaron Deverell had another fine game at 10. Adrian Hanley and David Hanlon had stormers and in the front row Eddie Brady and Cian Glennon had very good games.

A word for the unfortunate Colin Hughes who suffered a broken Fibula early in the game. He is only back three weeks from a broken hand  and is most unlucky.
