Convincing wins for 1sts and 2nds

NEWSTALK PROVINCIAL TOWNS CUP

CO. CARLOW   13   TULLAMORE   30.

Playing only their second match in 7 weeks it took Tullamore an hour to get to grips with this Cup match and when they shook of the cobwebs they ran out convincing winners in the last quarter. There could be a pre-match quiz for Tullamore supporters every week in trying to guess who gets injured between Wednesday selection and match day. Last Sundays answer was Mark Whelan and Ivor Deverell.

On a positive note it was good to see Niall Geraghty and Colin Hughes return after long absences and Niall seems to have solved the place kicking problem with a success rate of 6 from 6.

It was another man returning for his second game after three months, Aaron Deverell  that opened the scoring with a brilliant run after seven minutes with a try under the posts that Niall Geraghty converted. Shortly afterwards Niall added a long range penalty to leave the visitors ten up after 20 minutes. Following the  sin binning a player from each side the visitors were guilty of some terrible passing that Carlow capitalised on to score a breakaway try. Niall Geraghty extended the lead again with a penalty on 29 minutes. Following another bout of sloppy play Carlow scored a second try just before the break to leave the score at 13-10 to the visitors.

Within five minutes of the restart the sides were level when Tullamore failed to roll away from a ruck and were penalised. Within three minutes Aaron Deverell had weaved his magic again in the centre and ran from the halfway mark to score a try  that Niall converted. There was no way back for Carlow. Niall landed another penalty with ten minutes left. Winger Keith Scally got the final try following some clever handling by Aaron and Ivor Scully. Niall Geraghty finished off a great kicking performance with a touchline conversion.

Back to the Leinster League for the next five weeks starting with a trip to league leaders Seapoint next Sunday afternoon.
